The Tails of Wisteria Ranch - October 2007

Ramblings on the Ranch

Happy October -- Fall is here!

All of our Golden girls decided to come into heat all at once! We are going to have a very busy fall with lots of puppies.

I am learning to blog. I have it almost set up and ready to go and plan on launching next month. This will give everyone an opportunity to follow along with what is happening here on regular basis. I plan on blogging a couple times a week keeping everyone up-to-date on the development of our new litters, our training, and any news.

We have wanted to add another male Golden to our breeding program for awhile, but haven't had much luck with finding one that worked and met our criteria. We finally found one from Bella Gold Golden Retrievers with the help of Eva at Evidog Golden Retrievers in Slovakia, as well as Jill from GoldenLoves, AZ. We picked Harley up, along with one of his brothers, Augie, and sister, Poppy from Dallas. We delivered Augie to his new home to Nancy, AR and Poppy to Jill in AZ.

Isn't he beautiful? Thank you Eva for entrusting us with the love, care, and raising of one of your puppies.

We are truly honored!

Many Blessings,

Billy & Debbie

Tips for Training Your Pet

"Come" Command

Come is one of the basic commands and needs to be mastered for consistent obedience. This command can save your companion's life when in a situation that demands immediate return to you.

The ingredients for training the come command is two people, two clickers, and treats for a recipe of fun and learning for your puppy. Each person stands in a different room and takes turns calling the puppy - click when the puppy gets to you and give a treat. You will feel the fun and enjoyment the puppy has in going back and forth. Make it more challenging, by adding another person in another room.

This is a fun way for children to be involved with training the new puppy. Once the puppy masters this indoors, move to a confined area outdoors and continue with training there.

After mastering each command, you take away the clicker reinforcement and then work towards taking away the treat reinforcement, and just having a pet and a praise being all the reward. You will notice you can do this pretty quickly once the puppy/dog masters a few clicker commands.

Vega:

I have not used the Clicker Training method on an older dog before. We got Vega a few months ago. She just turned two in August, and I just started working on training her. She is very smart and has mastered sit, down and the come commands in just a few days. We are now working on "stay." She is really picking up on it and I can get a couple of feet away for a minute. We are working on progressively on getting longer stays. Vega gets so excited when she sees the clicker come out - she knows it is our one on one time and it is time to play!

" Stay Vega."

Point For Discussion

Male vs. Female

Many prospective families ask "which makes the better pet, male or female?" Many of us who love dogs have an opinion. In my opinion, both sexes make equally wonderful pets. Most opinions are based on an individual's experience. In general, the differences between male and female have been stated as:

Males are bigger, more affectionate, and attentive and demanding of your attention and time, and they are more distracted during training, but more food motivated. Males tend to stay more playful and puppy like as they age.

Females are smaller, more independent and are loving and affectionate on their terms, don't get as distracted during training, and therefore more easily trained. Females tend to have more weight problems and they tend to be more reserved and quiet as they age.

The one major complaint I hear is males tend to "hump and mark their territory." In our experience, we have had just as many females as males display this behavior. Both male and females can be territorial or possessive. We have also heard that males tend to be more aggressive and have a higher tendency to fight. Again, this type of behavior can be displayed in females and some of the worst fights tend to between two females - they can be vicious.

These differences are talked about without consideration of breed. Temperamentally, there is little differences between the male and female in the Golden Retriever or Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They are companion family dogs. Neutering a male dog before they start lifting their leg will help to in eliminating this trait. Spay or neutering should be done with any family pet, so that you are not dealing with hormonal issues from either sex.

In deciding on a puppy keep in mind, in most breeds, if they are well bred, socialized, and trained, they will get along with children, and other animals. Each dog is unique and matters more when finding the perfect companion or family dog than his or her gender.

We Recommend

Urine-Off Stain and Odor Remover - because Accidents Happen!

Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog, accidents do happen. It eliminates urine and removes urine stains, even old ones! It works on hardwood, carpet, concrete, tile, fabric and more. The bio-enzymes in the product break down the urine crystals and consume them, which eliminates the smells and the marks. It even works on strong tomcat urine (which is the worst) and also includes a pheromone blocker, which should keep pets from continuing to mark in the area. Try it out and let us know if it works for you.

With all the products out there - following their instructions is important for the best results!
